Reform was the bookies' favourite to win the Caerphilly by-election for the Welsh Senedd on Thursday. However, the Plaid Cymru candidate won comfortably, pushing Labour into a distant third place.

Nigel Farage had expected to celebrate the win, with a victory meal planned for Saturday night, to be addressed by Lee Anderson. Instead, Farage left, and his candidate departed the count without giving a speech.

Reform still took a sizeable chunk of the vote at 36%. The upset in Caerphilly was disastrous for Keir Starmer, as the constituency has been Labour for a century, being the heartland of Labour in the South Wales valleys.
