Lawmakers face conflicting calls to loosen, tighten regulation of hemp and marijuana

Lawmakers Face Conflicting Calls on Hemp and Marijuana Regulation

Lawmakers in Atlanta are considering changes to the regulation of hemp and marijuana, with some calling for loosened restrictions and others pushing for tighter controls.

Jennifer Conforti, the mother of a 15-year-old girl with profound autism, testified before lawmakers about her experience with medical cannabis. She explained that her daughter, Abby, was prescribed powerful drugs at the age of 3 to help manage her reactions, but they were ineffective.

Conforti decided to break the law and source marijuana to create a concentrate in her kitchen, which she said helped her daughter.

A decade ago, Georgia passed a medical cannabis law allowing patients on a state registry to obtain low-THC oil. While this helped Conforti's daughter, she testified that patients need access to products with higher levels of THC and in various forms, such as vape products or flower.
