Rise in Racist Abuse Against Nurses
Complaints of racism in the nursing profession have increased by 55% over three years, according to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
The RCN advice line receives around three calls daily from global majority nurses seeking support, with cases expected to exceed 1,000 in 2025 if current trends continue.
- Nearly 700 cases were logged in 2022
- Almost 800 cases in 2023
- More than 900 cases in 2024
The union warned that the true scale of racism in the profession is likely far higher, as many incidents go unreported.
Reports include nursing staff being called racial slurs by colleagues, employers failing to act on abuse, and patients refusing treatment by global majority staff.
