New Book Explores Hidden History of Newcastle Prison

A new book, co-written by Dr Shane McCorristine of Newcastle University, reveals the forgotten history of Newcastle's once-notorious prison.

Published on the 100th anniversary of the prison's closure, Newcastle Prison: A History, 1828-1925 explores the hidden stories and rare images of the lives of those incarcerated and the staff who worked within its walls.

The book is a collaboration between Dr McCorristine and crime historians Dr Helen Rutherford, Dr Clare Sandford-Couch, and Dr Patrick Low, and is published by Tyne Bridge Publishing.

The authors will discuss their book at a free event at Newcastle City Library on November 22nd at 2:00pm, as part of the Books on Tyne 2025 festival.
