Indigenous artist 'modernizing' Stratford Warriors' controversial logo

Indigenous Artist to Modernize Stratford Warriors' Logo

A local Indigenous artist is set to modernize the Stratford Warriors' logo, which features a Sioux chief and has sparked criticism and discussions about cultural insensitivity.

Maxine Noel, a renowned Indigenous artist of Sioux descent and Order of Canada recipient, will lead the redesign effort. Her works are featured in the Canadian Museum of History.

In addition to modernizing the logo, Noel will join the Greater Ontario Hockey League club as its Indigenous engagement director.

“We’re trying to educate ourselves to make sure we’re making the right decision,”

said team president Nick Aroutzidis. The team aims to approach the redesign process with caution and respect, avoiding any potential disrespect towards Indigenous groups.
