Michigan Lawmakers Focus on Earmark Transparency and Economic Development

Following the signing of the state budget, Michigan lawmakers are now directing their attention towards legislation aimed at increasing earmark transparency, particularly for economic development projects.

The state Senate has modified its rules to require lawmakers to publicly disclose their requested spending items before voting on the budget. This change was made as part of the budgetary compromise.

Earlier in the year, the Republican-led state House of Representatives adopted a similar policy, criticizing the Democratic-controlled state Senate for its slower pace. However, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) views the outcome as a step in the right direction for the budget process.
