The familiarity of a general store – The Bowdoin Orient

The Familiarity of a General Store

A visit to the BCMA to see the Gordon Parks exhibit sparked a reflection on general stores in Maine.

The exhibit featured a set of photographs centered on a quaint general store, which drew the author in and made them think about the role of general stores in community building.

Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.

The author recalls their childhood experience of visiting the Hope General Store, where they bought greasy pizza, delicious brownies, and unbeatable iced tea.

These stores, like the Hope General Store, where the author still buys Little Lad’s popcorn to this day, play a significant role in shaping our sense of community.

Author's summary: General stores shape community sense.
