Régis Defraye, the mayor of Verteillac, a village in Dordogne with 600 residents, has successfully brought his community back to life.
Defraye, 66, was invited to speak at the Folies Bergères in Paris, where he shared his story of reviving the village.
"I did not want to be mayor,"
he said, having initially hoped to stand as councillor in the 2020 municipal elections. However, upon returning to his native village in 2019, he witnessed its decline.
"Shops were closing one by one, we no longer had a committee for parties and cultural events. There was no soul left,"
he recalled. Through strong local mobilisation and collaboration, the village has regained its charm and vitality.
