Will Richard made a strong impression in his first NBA start for the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday. The former University of Florida standout scored 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, along with seven rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Despite his effort, the Warriors fell 121-116 to the host Sacramento Kings.
Richard had missed the Warriors’ previous two games, which the team split 1-1. Injuries to key players Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green led to Richard being inserted into the lineup, where he delivered an impressive performance.
“He’s shown he’s an NBA player,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “The experience, the poise – he doesn’t turn it over, he makes the right play. This guy’s a hell of a player.”
When asked if scoring 30 points mattered, Richard focused on the team effort. Sacramento was led by former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook, who recorded the 204th triple-double of his career—a new NBA record—with 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists.
The Warriors, now 5-4, will face the Denver Nuggets at 10 p.m. next.
