Canada Releases New Remembrance Day Toonie

The Royal Canadian Mint has introduced a new $2 circulation coin, marking the 25th anniversary of the repatriation of Canada’s Unknown Soldier, just ahead of Remembrance Day.

Design and Significance

The colourized coin was created by Canadian artist Mary-Ann Liu, the same sculptor who designed Canada’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. It serves as a tribute to the soldier’s return and the enduring legacy of Canada’s wartime sacrifices.

Historical Background

According to the Government of Canada, the soldier’s journey began on May 23, 2000, when a Canadian Forces aircraft traveled to France to recover the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission selected the remains from Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery near Vimy Ridge, the site of a key Canadian battle during the First World War.

“During a ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission turned over the remains to Canada.”

Following the ceremony, the Canadian delegation returned to Ottawa with the casket. Upon arrival on May 25, 2000, it was placed in the Hall of Honour in Parliament’s Centre Block, before being interred at the National War Memorial in a specially designed sarcophagus. The national broadcast of the ceremony allowed Canadians to collectively honour their Unknown Soldier.

Commemoration and Legacy

This new toonie symbolizes both remembrance and unity, reminding Canadians of the enduring cost of freedom and sacrifice across generations.

Author’s summary: The new two-dollar coin honours the 25th anniversary of Canada’s Unknown Soldier’s return, combining national memory, art, and tribute in a symbolic release for Remembrance Day.
