Danone has announced the closure of its Blédina infant-cereal production facility in France, impacting 117 employees. The plant is situated in Villefranche-sur-Saône within the Rhône department.
The factory manufactures the baby cereal brands Blédine and Phosphatine, the latter fortified with iron to help reduce anaemia among children in Africa. Both products are primarily sold in European and African markets.
“This project comes as the site has been facing a slow decline in activity for more than a decade in a structurally declining market in Europe and a complex market environment in Africa,” Danone stated.
According to the company, workers were informed on 4 November, ahead of consultations with employee representatives. The management added that although the site has seen considerable investments over the past decade, the plant’s economic sustainability can no longer be assured.
“Despite significant investment over the past ten years to support, transform and modernise the site, its economic future is no longer guaranteed,” the statement said.
Danone plans to shut its Blédina baby-cereal plant in Villefranche-sur-Saône, citing years of declining demand in Europe and market challenges in Africa that make operations unsustainable.
