A Srinagar court has sentenced Mohammad Shafi Banday, former Managing Director of the J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Limited, to six years in prison for fraudulently altering his date of birth to extend his official service tenure.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) stated that Banday was found guilty of forgery, cheating, and falsification of records to unlawfully prolong his career. The City Court of Judge, Srinagar, convicted him under Sections 420, 468, and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
The case began several years ago after a complaint alleged that Banday tampered with his birth records. He replaced his true date of birth, 26 June 1932, with a forged certificate stating 1 September 1939, extending his service by over seven years.
"The manipulation effectively extended his service tenure by more than seven years."
This verdict highlights a strong judicial stance on public accountability by punishing fraudulent manipulation of official records, regardless of the offender's age or position.
