Redesigning Services: Anti-racist models of home improvement

Without inclusive home improvement support, the wellbeing of people from racial minorities will be at risk, writes Nazia Azad of Centre for Ageing Better.

Older adults from racially minoritised communities are being locked out of access to home improvement services, leaving them in homes that put their safety at risk, limit their independence and further exacerbate existing inequalities.

New research by Centre for Ageing Better, conducted by the Race Equality Foundation, highlights the specific housing needs and barriers experienced by racially minoritised communities aged 65 and over.

Participants described being let down by housing services, treated with suspicion, or excluded from schemes, with experiences consistent across the country, suggesting these are structural, not isolated, issues.

The report, ‘Housing, Ageing and Racial Inequality: Developing an anti-racist Good Home Hub model’, aims to address these issues.

Author's summary: Inclusive home improvement support is crucial for racial minorities' wellbeing.
