Prison Capacity Crisis Driven by Remand Numbers
A new report highlights that the population of prisoners on remand has reached its highest level in fifty years, with over 17,000 people on remand in June 2025.
This accounts for 13% of the total prison population, a 5% increase from last year.
Those from racialised communities make up an over-proportional number of those on remand at 32%, and are more likely to be remanded in custody than White British defendants.
- The number of women on remand has increased by 22% since June 2024.
