England head coach Shaun Wane has made two adjustments to his squad ahead of the Third Ashes Test against Australia at AMT Headingley on Saturday. Joe Burgess and Harry Newman have been called up as potential replacements.
Hull KR winger Joe Burgess will step in for Dom Young, who suffered a broken foot late in England’s defeat to the Kangaroos at Everton. This marks Burgess’s first appearance for England since the 2015 series win over New Zealand.
Harry Newman, who has spent his career with the Leeds Rhinos, replaces Wigan Warriors centre Jake Wardle in the squad. Newman last played internationally at AMT Headingley when England secured a 2-0 series victory over Samoa in 2024.
John Bateman remains unavailable after rolling his ankle before the Second Test.
“Of course we are disappointed not to be going into this final game with the opportunity to win The Ashes, but the goal now is to come away from the series with a victory. We did a lot of good things last week but ultimately, we need to be even better if we want to get a win this weekend. It will be great to see Joe Burgess and Harry Newman in action this weekend. Joe has had a great season with Hull KR and Harry has been a consistent performer for me in an England jersey.” — Shaun Wane
