Jonathan Bailey was absent from NBC's television event Wicked: One Wonderful Night due to scheduling conflicts. His role as the Winkie Prince, also known as Fiyero, was temporarily covered by Bowen Yang, who performed the song “Dancing Through Life.”
The special aired on NBC on Thursday, November 6, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as headliners. They performed songs from both Wicked and the upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, sharing stories and excitement about the film’s making and upcoming release.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie adaptation brings to life the story of the Wicked Witch of the West (Erivo) and Glinda the Good Witch (Grande) long before Dorothy followed the yellow brick road. In the first film, both Elphaba and Glinda develop feelings for fellow student Fiyero, played by Bailey.
Most of the cast attended the live concert event, but Bailey could not participate. The production team made efforts to include him, but scheduling conflicts prevented it.
“They were trying to move mountains to make it happen,” said choreographer Christopher Scott in an interview with Variety.
Jonathan Bailey missed NBC’s Wicked: One Wonderful Night due to scheduling issues, while his co-stars celebrated the musical’s magic with live performances and enthusiasm for the sequel.
