The region of Minas Gerais, where these towns are located, holds a significant deposit of rare earth elements with high concentration levels. These elements are essential for energy transition technologies, the military industry, and are also central to trade disputes involving the US, China, and Brazil.
President Lula da Silva stated, "nobody will lay hands on" Brazilian minerals, in a message perceived as being directed at American President Donald Trump.
