Typhoon Fung-wong swept across the northwestern Philippines, causing severe floods and landslides. At least four people lost their lives, and more than 1.4 million were displaced due to the storm's impact.
The typhoon moved away from the province of La Union toward the South China Sea, with forecasts predicting a northwest turn toward Taiwan.
Fung-wong hit northeastern Aurora province Sunday night as a super typhoon, with sustained winds up to 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts reaching 230 kph (143 mph). It then weakened while moving through mountainous northern provinces and agricultural plains.
“Typhoon Fung-wong blew out of the northwestern Philippines on Monday after setting off floods and landslides, knocking out power to entire provinces, killing at least four people and displacing more than 1.4 million others.”
The storm struck while the Philippines was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which claimed at least 224 lives in central provinces and later caused at least five deaths in Vietnam.
Typhoon Fung-wong caused widespread destruction and displacement across northern Philippines, compounding the nation’s recovery from previous deadly storms.
