California can’t get out of its own way on geothermal

California's Geothermal Conundrum

California's governor, Newsom, vetoed popular legislation that would have spurred geothermal projects in the state.

In the early 2000s, the owners of the Mammoth Pacific geothermal station proposed expanding the plant near Yosemite National Park. The project's website claimed in 2004 that the new wells would be "carefully chosen to reduce or avoid potential environmental impacts."

The potential new wells... had been carefully chosen to reduce or avoid potential environmental impacts.

A study was produced by 2009 on the development's potential impact on plant life. Despite decades of safe operation since the 1980s, the project's approval was not swift.

Author's summary: California struggles with geothermal development despite its potential.
