Brahim Kaddour Cherif, a registered sex offender mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, was located and arrested after a member of the public spotted him and alerted the police.
The 24-year-old was freed in error, prompting a large-scale search by the Metropolitan Police, who were informed of his release on Tuesday. Officers quickly acted to find him.
Cherif was convicted in November 2024 for indecent exposure related to an incident earlier that year in March. He received an 18-month community order and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.
Authorities identified Cherif as an Algerian national with connections to Tower Hamlets and frequenting the Westminster area.
"At 11.23am on Friday, 7 November, a call was received from a member of the public reporting a sighting of a man they believed to be Brahim Kaddour-Cherif in the vicinity of Capital City College on Blackstock Road in Islington."
The police responded immediately and detained him at 11.30am. His identity was confirmed, and he was arrested for being unlawfully at large.
"He was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker in relation to a previous unrelated incident. He has been taken into police custody. The Prison Service has been informed."
The quick response by authorities and vigilant public reporting led to the capture of a mistakenly released registered sex offender now back in police custody.
